General Description
Part of the 'picturesque landscape' popular during the Period of Significance, specimen trees serve to interrupt the ground plane, providing intermittent focal points and shade. Minutes from the November 4, 1871 Governors' meeting state, "The board are of the opinion that a greater proportion of deciduous trees of brilliant foliage in the Fall should be maintained in future plantings, and that indigenous trees, as many as possible, should be procured from the woods of the Home grounds or vicinity."
