Description

General Description

Before North Capitol Street was extended and the old Woods tract was given to The Catholic University of America, these unmarked cannons were located at the South East Gate Lodge on Fourth Street, N.E. They were later placed at at the east entrance to the Home's Service Area (Scale Gate or North Capitol Street Gate). They have since been removed and are temporarily stored at the Heating Plant (Building 46).

Research conducted in 2014 reveals that these cannons are most likely iron field howitzers, possibly 12-pounders. The tube is approximately 6'3" in length (almost 7' include the cascable). The muzzle swells at the face, the tube is reinforced with a step past the trunnions, and there are bands at the muzzle and the base ring. The bore is plugged with wood. There are no visible markings.
